Film, 14 seconds on a loop, no sound and no text in the picture. At night, filmed by a drone from behind and above, a person with a bike light rides along a cycle path between dark fields. Road Studs set into the surface glow as a row of bright points along the edge and trace the route ahead. In between, short shots at dusk: the cycle path between a meadow and trees and the edge of a town, then night again, the path from directly above and low across the fields against a pink evening sky.

The planning problem

How can we reconcile the various interests involved in lighting cycle paths? Planning is an integration task involving many stakeholders in urban, rural, and natural areas. Lighting must be adapted to the situation in order to ensure respect for nature and attractive mobility.

Urban-rural mobility with cycle highways

Our Solar Road Studs with integrated solar modules provide orientation in the direction of travel. They are completely self-sufficient, powered by sunlight. The surrounding nature is protected by minimal light emission, a fraction of a candle's light (0.1 to 1.3 lm).

Programmable switch-off times provide the wildlife with important rest periods. Motion detectors can be combined, and depending on the version the lights are controlled via external control signals or LoRaWAN.

With Road Studs, bicycle paths can be safely and visually separated from pedestrian or vehicle traffic, even in the dark. The flush-mounted integrated lights create an optical separation and increase the sense of safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Especially in urban areas with high traffic density, the lights help to defuse potential conflict zones and prevent accidents. Their discreet appearance blends inconspicuously into the cityscape.

More cycling, less traffic

An attractive, well-lit bicycle path encourages more people to use the bicycle as a means of transport, contributing to a healthier, more active community. Good design and effective lighting attract both daily commuters and recreational cyclists, increasing the city's appeal. For societies looking to reduce car dependency and expand eco-friendly transport options, bike paths offer a practical solution that promotes public health and reduces urban congestion.

Urban challenges for shared space

Urban environments benefit greatly from intelligently designed bike paths, especially in busy city centers where paths intersect with pedestrian zones and public transport stops. By using subtle light indicators, our luminaires help create instinctively understood separations between areas and avoid conflicts between different user groups. This intuitive design approach fits seamlessly into the urban space and encourages more people to use the bicycle.

Going the extra mile

For commuters traveling long distances, well-marked bike paths increase safety over extended routes. Uniform lighting serves as a reassuring guide for cyclists, especially at night. Our luminaires provide reliable, low-emission lighting that improves visibility and defines the paths to support commuters and promote sustainable travel. These benefits make ground lighting a valuable asset in promoting a more bicycle-friendly, environmentally conscious society.

Example of a bike lane

Film, 1 minute 49 seconds, with a soundtrack that plays only after the sound button is pressed. Cyclists, one of them with a child trailer, ride along a cycle path between fields at night and at dusk, filmed by a drone from behind and above. Road Studs set into the surface glow along the edge as a row of bright points in the direction of travel. These lines appear in the picture one after another: More orientation. Safe travels. With intelligently illuminated cycle paths. Visible. Safe. Smart. Safety starts with visibility. Solar-powered, robust lighting technology. Integrated directly into the path. More safety, especially on long distance routes. Attractive for commuters and leisure cyclists. Nature-friendly control with off-times for the night. Activation on demand for environmentally friendly mobility. Orientation and safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Light focus on the route, protection of nature. Instinctively recognizable routing. Lighting with respect for nature. Low-rise. Robust. Can be driven over, even in winter, snowplough-proof. Orientation in any light, powered by the sun. Integrated solar modules or solar poles enable safe cycle paths everywhere. The future of cycling infrastructure starts here. Find out more at www.jobe-lighting.com.

Projects for this application area

Installation in three steps.

  1. Drill, clean and dry the hole

The hole is drilled at the defined location, cleared of drilling dust and fully dried with hot air.

  2. Insert alignment aid and adhesive

The alignment aid aligns the Road Stud. The adhesive is poured in, and the LEDs must be aligned correctly.

  3. Let it cure

Once the adhesive has cured, the alignment aid is removed. Curing time depends on the weather.
